INDIGESTION

Definition

As the name indicates that the food is being Digested with Difficulty.

Digestion is Performed by various Digestive Enzymes which in Ayurveda are termed as "PACHAKA PITTA or PACHAKA AGNI".

Indigestion (Ajirna) is caused due to Deficient Secretions & functioning of Digestive Enzymes(Pachaka Rasa+Agni). This leads to formation of AMA ( The Culprit of Many Diseases).

Symptoms

  • Loss of Appetite
  • Abdominal distension (Bloating).
  • Eructations
  • Nausea
  • Heart Burn.
  • Chest, Abdominal Heaviness.
  • Abdominal Pain (Persistent or Spasmodic).
  • Headache
  • Few or No bowel movements through out the day.
  • Trouble having a bowel movement (straining to go).
  • Hard or small stools.
  • A sense that everything didn’t come out (Unsatisfactory).
  • Swollen belly or belly pain.
Symptoms

Causes

  • Overuse of spices, sour, salty food.
  • Overuse of foods which increases the level of TRIDOSHA-VATA-PITTA-KAPHA like Potatoes, Brinjal, Radish, Pulses except green gram & red gram, Fermented foods like Idli, Dosa, all Bakery items like breads etc.
  • Taking food on uneven time.
  • Addiction like Tea, Coffee, Smoking, Drinking Alcohol, Tobacco.
  • Taking so much Mental Stress, Anxiety.
  • Taking sleep on uneven time.
  • Allopathic Medicines as Pain killers, Steroids, Antibiotics, Etc.
Causes

Pathology

  • Secretions of Digestive Enzymes gets impaired by previously described Causes.
  • This leads to Weakening of Digestive Power (Pachaka Agni). Hence it Can not Digest the Foods properly.
  • When undigested food gets Fermented in Stomach and Intestines, It produces more amount of VATA(Gas-Bloating),PITTA(Acidity)and AMA DOSHAS.

Ayurveda Treatment

Panchakarma

Panchakarma Treatment is needed only if the duration of the Disease manifestation is above 2 years.

Before starting any Panchakarma Treatment, langhana (fasting), dipanam(stimulating Digestive Power) and pachana (improving metabolism) is to be done with the help of Ayurveda Medicines.

  • Basti (If the Patient is VATA DOSHA Dominant).
    Ayurvedic BASTI means giving Enema into the rectum of herbal decoctions or Herbal oil and certain herbal preparations.
  • Virechana (If the Patient is PITTA DOSHA Dominant).
    Expelling the morbid accumulation of DOSHA particularly PITTA from the intestines by way of inducing purgation
Panchakarma
